Schedules and Articles of the Constitution

Subject: Polity | Unit: Constitution Basics | Topic: Schedules and Articles Exam: AP Group 2 (APPSC) Prerequisites: Salient Features of the Constitution

Introduction

The Indian Constitution is organized into Parts, Articles, and Schedules. The Parts provide the structural framework, Articles contain the substantive provisions, and Schedules contain supplementary details that would be too extensive to include in the main text. Mastery of the schedule-article-part mapping is essential for APPSC exams, as questions frequently test the ability to match articles with their subjects and schedules with their content.

Historical Context / Constitutional Background

The original Constitution had 22 Parts, 395 Articles, and 8 Schedules. Through subsequent amendments, this has expanded to approximately 25 Parts, 470+ Articles, and 12 Schedules. Parts IVA, IXA, IXB, and XIVA were added by various amendments, while Part VII was repealed by the 7th Amendment. Four new Schedules (9th through 12th) were added between 1951 and 1992.
